8:45-9:15 Homework/Silent Reading/Question of the Day Objective: Homework, Question of the Day & Silent Reading

Question (on white board) : Share something you did on the weekend.

Once everyone has arrived and completed their morning tasks, I get them to come to the carpet. We do our morning announcements and then review the question of the day. Usually my focus is on writing complete sentences with punctuation & capital letters. They need these reminders. I read their answers, allowing them to share if they wrote it (of course if they want to share) and we have a fun discussion about their answers, all while reviewing their sentences.

9:15-10:15 Shared Reading

Reading Expectations:

C1.1 Using Reading Comprehension Strategies: identify a range of reading comprehension strategies and use them appropriately before, during, and after reading to understand a variety of French texts, with support as appropriate

C1.4 Developing Vocabulary: identify and use several different strategies to expand vocabulary through reading

C2.3 Metacognition: (a) identify, in conversation with the teacher and their peers, a few strategies they found helpful before, during, and after reading to understand texts; (b) determine their areas of greater and lesser strength as readers, and plan steps they can take to improve their reading skills

Shared Reading is a big part of my weekly routine. We work with the same text all week, expanding our vocabulary, answering comprehension questions, etc.

Here's how it works:

Step 1: The text is on the smart board and I read it aloud to students.

Step 2: Students are placed in groups of 2 at random and read it a second time, taking turns. As they go over the text, they must underline 3 words that they don't

understand.

Step 3: They will then write their 3 words on a sticky note and go place it on my chart paper.

Step 4: Continued tomorrow...

9:45-10:45 Visual Art (will also include Writing later on)

Visual Arts Expectations:

D1.3 use elements of design in art works to communicate ideas, messages, and understandings

Explain to students that today, they will be making a drawing of their back pack. Their back pack needs to look as closely as possible to the one they bring to school every day. They will need to show the zippers, the tags, any charms that may be on it, etc. They are to do this on a white sheet of paper. They may need to go check on their back pack as they draw it, which is always ok with me. Please note that this art project will go with a writing piece.

10:45-11:25 Nutrition Break & Recess

Students should now know the rules of nutrition break, feel free to see how they do without repeating yourself. If they have a hard time, review rules tomorrow.

11:25-11:55 Bullying/Speaking/Listening

Expectations:

Listening:

A2.1 Using Interactive Listening Strategies: identify and use interactive listening strategies to suit the situation while participating in a variety of social and academic interactions about familiar and personally relevant topics

A2.2 Interacting: respond with understanding to what others say while participating in a variety of interactions about familiar, academic, and personally relevant topics

Speaking:

B2.1 Using Speaking Interaction Strategies: demonstrate an understanding of appropriate speaking behaviour in a variety of situations

B2.2 Interacting: engage in rehearsed and spontaneous spoken interactions, in structured and guided social and academic contexts, on familiar topics related to matters of personal interest and academic topics

We are onto our next lesson on bullying. Today, I tell students that they have a challenge to complete in teams. I divide my class into groups of 5 or 6 and tell them that to start, they will empty their tubes of toothpaste on a plate. Once they are done, I get them to stop and look at me. I tell them that now they have a challenge. They must put the toothpaste BACK in the tube, without cutting the tube obviously. They must work as a team and they MUST speak FRENCH. I DO NOT TELL THEM THAT THIS IS A BULLYING ACTIVITY.

I give them about 15 minutes to try and get the toothpaste back in the tube. After the time is up, I tell them to discard the mess, wash their hands and to meet me on the carpet. Once at the carpet, tell them that there was a reason you asked them to do this. Ask them if it was possible to get all the toothpaste back in the tube. The answer will obviously be that it is not possible. Now have them think, how could this relate to bullying? Let them think and share their ides. The goal of this is to make the understand that once they say something mean to someone, it is impossible to take it back. What is said, is said, and it is likely that the other person is hurt and will not forget what was said. This is something that can stay with someone forever, so it is important to think long and hard before we say something that may be hurtful to someone else.
